Harriet Jacobs, as known as Linda Brent, was a slave in the 1800¡¯s that was mistreated severely throughout mostly her teenage life.  Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, has changed the way that I look at the lives of slaves now.  Harriet lived a pretty easy life until the death of her kind mistress when she had to move in with her new slave holders, or master.  Harriet ended up getting willed to one of her younger nieces.  This would turn out to be a huge disaster and would cause pain to come in the following years of her life.  

Mrs. Flint and Dr. Flint were the main people who controlled her life during her teenage years.  Dr. Flint would try to sexually abuse Harriet and would harass her daily.  Harriet hated the life she was living and desperately wanted to find something better.  Dr. Flint in my opinion was crazy and had no respect for blacks.  In Jacobs¡¯ desperation to escape the advanced of her master and to try to find freedom, Jacobs¡¯ found herself in a relationship with one of her white neighbors that found her attractive.  He treated her with respect and he held a part in the escape of the Flints.  Her escape was basically her hiding in a little attic of a friend¡¯s house for a couple of years.  

She traveled up north in pursuit of freedom, but in turn found herself avoiding the Fugitive Slave Law.  This was one problem that she had to avoid unless she wanted to end up back with Dr. Flint.  Jacobs eventually finds her freedom mainly because she was determined and she exerts her won power.  Even though all slave masters has control over her, she was smart and slick enough to take the power she had and knew to over come whatever obstacles that she encountered.  Even though it was not allowed to get married, she still possessed the power to have two kids.  When Dr. Flint finds out about her children, it infuriates him.  This is one of the main reasons why Harriet realizes that she must try to escape.  It was for her, and for the safety of her children.  Dr. Flint could not handle that she wasn¡¯t having her children with him.  Even though Harriet never really received any beating or physical abuse, it was cruel words and mental abuse that she couldn¡¯t stand any longer.  

In Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs is not trying to point out that all slaves had a terrible life.  She is trying to point out that slavery does not have to be cruel; it is based on people and their own cruelty towards their slaves.  Dr. Flint is one of those slave owners who had no respect or concern for African-Americans or his slaves.  An example of a non-cruel slave owner would be the owner of Harriet¡¯s mom and grandmother.  Harriet¡¯s words and experiences have changed my outlook on the lives of slaves a lot.  I now understand the hardships that some slaves underwent and the abuse that took place.  One example in the book that particularly startled me was when Mrs. Flint asks Harriet to take off her shoes that she has just gotten because the noise that they were making was too loud and annoying.  Harriet was forced to walk barefoot in snow in which she developed frostbite.
